A Clinical Revies of Hirschsprung's Disease

Abstract
This is a report of our experience in the management of 26 cases with Hirschsprung's disease who had been operated on using a Swenson procedure and rectal myomectomy for the treatment of the disease at the Department of Surgery, Hae Dong Hospital
from
January 1991 to August 1994.
Nineteen of the cases(73%) were male, a male to female ration of approximately 2.8:1.
Associated anomalies were detected in 6 patients. The anomalies were cryptorchidism, hydrocele, Meckel's diverticulum, ankyloglossia, ptosis and imperforated anus.
Presenting symptoms in order of frequency were abdominal distension (73%), constipation(65%), diarrhea(23%), vomiting(12%), sepsis(8%) and anal bleeding(4%).
Histologic confirmation was obtained in 26 cases(100%) and in 26 cases the level of aganglionic bowel was confirmed to be in the rectum, sigmoid or rectosigmoid.
Two surgical techniques were employed in the definitive management of the 26 cases: the Swenson sphincter-saving proctectomy(20 cases) and rectal myomectomy(6 cases).
One of the 20 patients undergoing the Swenson sphincter-saving proctectomy developed constipation, one developed anastomotic leakage and two developed late enterocolitis.
